Description

This course is a basic study of the Bible and the church. Lessons 1–6 emphasize the nature and the process of revelation, including the mechanics involved in recording and preserving God’s Word. Attention is focused on the development of the canon of Scripture. Lessons 7–12 focus on the church as the divine institution through which people begin and develop fellowship with God. You will consider the biblical basis for the church, its Old Testament antecedents, and its beginning, nature, and purpose. You will examine the organization of the church and the kinds of ministry to which it is called, as well as its future.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to: 1. Explain the nature of God’s revelation and what makes special revelation more complete than general revelation. 2. Identify four theories of biblical inspiration and point out the weaknesses of those that differ from plenary inspiration. 3. Define the terms revelation, inspiration, and illumination. 4. Describe the genuineness of the Bible and explain why we can rely on it for guidance in faith and practice. 5. Discuss the formation of the Old and New Testament canon. 6. Define universal church and local church, emphasizing the similarities and differences between them. 7. Differentiate between the church as an organism and the organization of the church. 8. Show the relationship of the church’s inward challenge and ministry to its outward challenge and ministry. 9. Explain why the ministry of the early church is the best example for present church ministry.
