Description

Most students have noticed that people around them have emotional, spiritual, economic, and physical problems. Even the most persuasive sermon may not be heard by someone with serious personal problems. The Christian student, layperson, pastor, or religious worker must find ways to help people with their problems. Introduction to Pastoral Counseling is a look at the different perspectives from which pastoral counseling may be seen. It emphasizes the necessary steps in preparing to become a pastoral counselor, and gives attention to legal and practical ramifications of counseling. It also examines some of the issues faced by the pastoral counselor, seeking to find a balance between the clinical and the spiritual, with the Bible as the final authority. This course investigates some of the current approaches to counseling and sets guidelines for counseling settings and sessions. There are no college-level prerequisites for the course. A scientific calculator is essential, specifically for the last lesson on exponentials and logarithms.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to: 1. Identify and apply general algebraic concepts and properties of numbers. 2. Place positive and negative numbers on the number line and work expressions based on the Order of Operations. 3. Express and compute numbers with exponents, including those used in scientific notation. 4. Perform mathematical operations on polynomials and calculate the numerical values of their coefficients and variables. 5. Separate numbers or expressions into their smallest factors. 6. Recognize terms and various forms associated with mathematical functions, and evaluate simple functions. 7. Solve and graph linear equations, and apply them to real-life situations. 8. Graph solutions to both linear inequalities and linear systems. 9. Perform mathematical operations on rational expressions after establishing their restricted values and lowest common denominators. 10. Demonstrate an understanding of radicals and the rules for combining radical expressions. 11. Evaluate quadratic equations, including those applied to real-life problems, by using the quadratic formula and other solving methods. 12. Recognize and distinguish between exponential and logarithmic forms.
