Description
Through this course, the student will be enabled to help others become effective teachers of adults.
The course is designed to quicken the student to understand and apply the principles of Christian adult
education to a program of church leadership training appropriate to his or her cultural context. It
combines a study of theory, history, and practical application with a variety of anecdotes to illustrate the
concepts. The focus is primarily on education and training for church leadership and ministry, although
the principles can apply to other programs. The course also emphasizes the recognition of individual,
cultural, environmental, and occupational demands that inform the shaping of a contextualized
educational program. It is intended to provide the tools to enable educators to teach Christian adults
with excellence.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
1.
Define and correctly apply in discourse the key terms related to Christian adult education in
cultural context.
2.
Outline the historical developments in adult education from Old Testament times to the present
and their impact on Christian adult education today.
3.
Summarize the nature and purposes of learning for Christian adults.
4.
Demonstrate through an examination of several theories the special characteristics of adult
learning as applied to a Christian context.
5.
Evaluate the implications of cultural differences in the design and implementation of a Christian
adult education program.
6.
Analyze the context surrounding an adult education program, and develop practical ways to
address the multifaceted implications.
7.
Apply a systems-based approach to the organization of a Christian adult education program in an
integrated manner.
8.
Outline the major considerations for designing a curriculum for Christian adult education.
9.
Design a course for Christian adult education including the required sequential steps and their
contribution to the whole.
10.
`Apply the principles of effective teaching in the fulfillment of the three major roles of a teacher.
