Description

This course introduces the student to the ancient pursuit of wisdom, both in Israel and among her neighbors, and the genre, content, and social context of the wisdom writings. The course examines both Old Testament wisdom books and wisdom writings produced in the period between the Testaments. Particular attention is given to themes that run throughout the wisdom tradition and the ways these themes develop and change in successive wisdom writings. The course also considers the ways wisdom writings helped shape the New Testament and continue to influence the church today.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to: 1. Analyze and interpret the form, content, and social context of wisdom writings. 2. Compare and contrast the relationship between Israel’s wisdom tradition and that of her neighbors. 3. Assess the major themes considered in the wisdom tradition and how they develop and sometimes stand in tension with one another. 4. Evaluate the special contributions of individual wisdom writers. 5. Compare and contrast the fundamental tension within wisdom writings between doctrinal beliefs and life experiences. 6. Analyze the ways New Testament faith has been influenced and shaped by Israel’s wisdom tradition. 7. Synthesize the contributions of wisdom writings into living a full Christian life in one’s own culture and context.
